World of Wine - Germany, Austria, Alsace, England

Germanic wines? Isn't it all Blue Nun and Black Tower? No, actually! Come along and find out more...

Part One - Alsace

Alsace, in Eastern France, lies on the border with Germany and is as German as it is French with regards to population, architecture and grape varieties. Germanic Riesling and Gewurtztraminer are found here side-by-side with French Pinot Blanc and Gris all adding to a small but complex wine producing region offering the most aromatic and different styles in comparison to the rest of France. It's unusual, it's unique and the wines are great.

Part Two - Germany, Austria

Forget the Germany of the past - the UK used to be inundated with sugary, unbalanced wines from Germany - such as Leibfraumilch. It is now, however, dominated by dry, fresh and mineral wines from Riesling, Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) and Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) and the complex and wonderful Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder). It's a country with a well guarded secret of amazing wines that we'll be investigating! We'll also be trying an Austrian Gruner Veltliner.

Part Three - England

You haven't tried English wine yet?  Well whyever not?  With over 500 vineyards and wineries now in the UK, English wine (as it's known) is having it's day.  Crisp and full of glorious acidity, English wines are impressing everyone - even the French Champagne houses are coming over and buying land.  Come along and find out why!
